Grace Reformed Church

Grace Reformed Church Theodore Roosevelt attended Grace Reformed Church while serving as Vice President and President of the United States (1901-1909). It was his rule to walk to and from the church, and he almost always brought friends or family members. He was prompt, arriving just a minute or two before the service began. Legend has it, people set their watches by his arrival!

According to church history, TR was engaged in every part of the service, singing each hymn with enthusiasm and listening most intently to the sermon, with his eyes never leaving the pastor.

TR made significant contributions to the church as well. He laid the cornerstone for the sanctuary in 1902 and participated in its dedication. In addition, he sent flowers from the White House greenhouse every Saturday for Sunday’s worship service.

The church continues to maintain TR's legacy in several ways. The pew he used is still in service. In the Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Room, there is an original oil portrait by J. Redding Kelly depicting TR just after his return from Cuba. Some books, papers, pictures and memorabilia are also preserved.

Grace Reformed Church, located at 1405 15th Street NW in
Washington, DC, is listed in the National Register of Historical Places.
