Capital Area Theodore Roosevelt® Police Award

The Theodore Roosevelt® Police Award honors a deserving local, state or federal law enforcement officer in the Washington, DC region who has overcome a serious handicap, illness, or injury and continues to render outstanding and praiseworthy service to his or her department.

Presented in a formal ceremony in the fall, the award includes a $1,000 cash prize*, a 10-inch bust of Theodore Roosevelt, a ribbon medal and a commendation bar for the officer's uniform. In addition, the officer's name is engraved on a plaque displayed at his or her department headquarters for one year following the award.

To be eligible for consideration, the individual must be a full-time employee of a federal, state or local law enforcement agency in the Washington, DC metropolitan area and have experienced a serious physical handicap, illness or injury. The injury or illness could have occurred prior to entering the police force; an injury may have taken place while off-duty. The individual must be in good standing with his or her department.

Nominations, accepted during the summer, must be endorsed by the individual's commanding officer and department chief and should include a detailed description of the nominee's handicap, illness, or injury, efforts to overcome the adversity, accomplishments, service record, dates of appointment and assignments.

The TRA established the Theodore Roosevelt® Police Award to honor TR's distinguished service as president of the Board of Police Commissioners of New York City from 1895 to 1897, and in recognition of his lifelong admiration for the police. He rose to that post --and a life of public service-- after overcoming debilitating illness in his youth. The Capital Area Chapter's Award joins those in nine other cities/regions, including New York City, Boston, Western New York State, Long Island New York, Los Angeles, New Orleans, Nashville, Dallas and Philadelphia.

*In the event that departmental policy prohibits direct payments to officers, a $1,000 contribution will be made in the recipient's name to a charity of his or her choice.
